In the tolerant and enquiring times in the West over recent decades many people have become interested in other
faiths than Christianity in particular in Buddhism.
To some people Buddhism appeals because of its promises of calm and enlightenment where traditional "Creationist" Christianity has come to be intellectually regarded, by many, as having been discredited by the challenge of alternative explanations of Human Existence such as the Darwinian Theory of Evolution. Non "Creationist" Eastern Mysticism being less open to such intellectual criticism. Our web site features several pages on World Faith mysticism featuring key quotations from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Taoism. Links to two such pages that might be held to be particularly relevant to the Buddhism vs Christianity debate are offered below. (For the sake of convenience these Buddhism and Christianity quotations pages will open as pop-up windows).
From these two pages it can be seen that Buddhism and Christianity both focus on the same “Central” mystical truths BUT from a wider view of faith there are important differences of approach. In relation to sin for example Buddhism seems to see avoidance of sin as a route to the avoidance of personal suffering whereas Christianity traditionally sees sins as being inherently displeasing to God. |
